The Hague convened the first Peace Conference on May 18, 1899 . It was the first time in history that the governments of the world came together to find a way of securing world peace. The International Council of Women along with peace workers around the world held mass demonstrations for peace before the conference setting in motion onbservance of the day as Peace Day. In 1901, the ICW along with the American Peace Society organized the effort and in 1905 the first official celebrations of
the day began in schools throughout the nation and the world. In the years following, the United States Department of Education produced class materials which were given to schools across the country. While the day was never fully integrated throughout the world, peacemakers in many countries celebrated the day.
